Mehdi Benatia has opened up about his challenging beginnings at Olympique de Marseille and his strained relationship with José Anigo, who was then in charge of the training center.
“At that time, Anigo made me lose interest in football. He completely sidelined me overnight,” revealed the 27-year-old Moroccan international, who has made 30 appearances and scored 5 goals in Serie A this season, in an interview with beIN Sports.
One notable incident was when Anigo prevented him from participating in the renowned Minots draw against PSG at the Parc des Princes in 2006. Benatia never made an appearance for the Marseille first team. Instead, he was loaned out for two years to Tours and then Lorient before making a successful comeback with Clermont.
