The Libyan football club Al-Sawaid announced the passing of their young player, Youssef Mohammed Al-Hamali, aged 22, after he accidentally swallowed his tongue while sleeping.
According to the Libyan News Agency, Al-Hamali experienced an incident of tongue swallowing during his sleep, resulting in oxygen deprivation to the brain and inducing a state of complete coma before he breathed his last.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Libyan club Al-Sawaid has decided to halt all sporting activities at the club for three days as a mark of mourning for the deceased.
Al-Hamali was part of the Libyan Olympic team roster that participated in the qualifiers for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, hosted by the Kingdom of Morocco.
