Pape Diouf, the Franco-Senegalese former president of Olympique de Marseille, had aspired to lead the town hall of Marseille but was unsuccessful in the first round of the French municipal elections held on March 23, 2014. Diouf secured only 8.1% of the votes in the 7th sector and did not qualify for the second round. In a press release, he criticized what he perceived as “acts of fraud” on election day.
Another footballer-turned-politician, David Ginola, also faced defeat in this election. His political group was eliminated in the first round, securing only four seats out of 33 on the municipal council.
On a brighter note, Ludovic Giuly, another former footballer, experienced success as he was part of a list that secured 100% of the votes in Limonest. However, it’s worth noting that this achievement should be viewed in perspective, as their list was the only one in the running.
