In their match against Rennes on Saturday, Marseille suffered their sixth home defeat of the season. The Stade Vélodrome, once a fortress, now mirrors the team’s lackluster performance and absence of passion. The fervor that once characterized Olympique de Marseille seems to have vanished completely.
According to Benjamin Mendy, the players themselves are to blame for the current state of affairs at the club.
“The coaches implement certain strategies, but ultimately, it’s up to us, the players on the field. We need to put in the effort during the game, and unfortunately, we didn’t do that, or we did it poorly (against Rennes),” confessed Mendy on Marseille’s official website.
Having observed the match from the bench, the former Le Havre player may return to the left side for the upcoming game against Sochaux next Saturday. José Anigo, Marseille’s coach, was openly critical of the players following their defeat to Stade Rennais in a post-match press conference.
