Despite being eliminated after two losses in their previous matches, the Zambian women’s U17 national team, known as the Shepolopolo, ended their campaign at the Under-17 Women’s World Cup on a high note. Facing Costa Rica, the host country, Zambia showed resilience and determination to secure a 2-1 victory in their final match.
Zambia fell behind early in the game when Sofia Varela scored for Costa Rica in the 3rd minute. However, they quickly bounced back, with Grace Chanda equalizing just five minutes later. After halftime, Maria Arraya unfortunately scored an own goal, giving Zambia the lead.
Although already eliminated from the tournament, the victory against Costa Rica was a significant achievement for the Shepolopolo, marking their first win in a U17 Women’s World Cup.
In other matches, Ghana faced Canada in their final group stage game, suffering a 2-1 defeat despite a goal from Sandra Owusu Ansah. Ghana’s Black Maidens will now prepare to face Italy in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Flamingoes have already secured their spot in the next round with two consecutive victories. They will play their final group stage match against Mexico on Monday.
