Arsène Wenger, who arrived in London in 1996, marks his thousandth match this Saturday against Chelsea. In his 18 years leading the Gunners, the French manager has had his share of successes and failures in player recruitment.
According to a survey conducted by L’Equipe, Marouane Chamakh stands out as Wenger’s biggest recruitment mistake, as voted by 27% of nearly 26,000 participants. Despite a promising start after joining from Bordeaux, the Moroccan striker failed to make a significant impact at the Emirates Stadium.
Following Chamakh are Russian Andrei Arshavin (22%) and South Korean Park Chu-young (21%), both considered disappointments in Wenger’s recruitment history at Arsenal.
