Nigerian defender William Troost Ekong is poised to make a triumphant return to the Super Eagles squad earlier than anticipated, signaling his readiness for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Troost Ekong’s absence from recent Super Eagles fixtures stemmed from an injury sustained during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which necessitated surgery in Finland.
However, the determined defender is on track to rejoin the national team for the crucial qualifiers scheduled for June.
“I should be back and fit in May. But I think my club season is over (this season). You never know how the rehabilitation will go, but I don’t want to rush because at the age of 30 you have to be smart about these injuries,” Troost Ekong affirmed, reflecting on his recovery journey following his stellar performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite his eagerness to return to the pitch, Troost Ekong remains cautious, prioritizing his long-term fitness over immediate returns.
While aiming for a comeback before the current season concludes, he emphasizes the importance of being fully prepared for the challenges ahead.
“I want to be 100% for next season. If I can play at the end of this season, that’s great, otherwise I will be ready for next season,” Troost Ekong emphasized, underlining his commitment to a thorough rehabilitation process to ensure his peak performance.
With Nigeria gearing up for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Troost Ekong’s impending return adds depth and experience to the Super Eagles squad, bolstering their prospects as they aim to secure their place on the global stage.
As the countdown to the qualifiers begins, all eyes will be on Troost Ekong’s comeback, marking a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s football journey.
