Ghana’s quest for a victory in 2024 remained elusive as they were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Uganda in an international friendly match held in Marrakech, Morocco, on Tuesday.
Coach Otto Addo made significant changes to the starting lineup, introducing Joseph Wollacott, Denis Odoi, Ebenezer Annan, Francis Abu, and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku.
However, despite the alterations, the Black Stars failed to secure a win, extending their winless streak for the year.
Ghana started brightly, displaying dominance in midfield, and managed to take the lead in the 6th minute through a powerful header from Jérôme Opoku, assisted by Jordan Ayew.
However, Uganda responded swiftly, with Steven Mukwala converting a penalty in the 23rd minute to draw level.
Ayew, pivotal for Ghana throughout the match, restored the lead with a composed penalty in the 26th minute after Denis Odoi was fouled in the box.
Despite the Black Stars’ efforts to maintain their advantage, Uganda capitalized on defensive lapses to equalize once again in the 82nd minute through Muhammad Shaban’s goal.
The encounter showcased a second half marred by frequent fouls, disrupting the flow of the game.
Ghana’s inability to hold onto their lead highlights the team’s struggles to convert promising starts into victories.
The draw against Uganda adds to Ghana’s mixed record in 2024, with four draws and two defeats in six matches.
These fixtures served as crucial preparation for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic in June.
Currently positioned fourth in Group I, with three points from two matches, Ghana faces a critical juncture in their qualifying campaign.
The Black Stars must secure victories in their next two matches to reignite hopes of qualifying for the tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
As Ghana reflects on the draw against Uganda and looks ahead to future challenges, the focus shifts to refining strategies and bolstering performances in the pursuit of World Cup qualification.
