Gianni Merlo, the president of the International Association of the Sports Press (AIPS-MONDE), emphasized the potential of African sports journalists during the official opening of the ordinary congress of African journalists in Dakar. He acknowledged the achievements of past African sports journalists but stressed the importance of the new generation stepping up and surpassing their predecessors.
Merlo highlighted the need for better training and a more open-minded approach among African sports journalists to fulfill their potential. He encouraged journalists not to give up and emphasized the importance of embracing new media platforms as the future of journalism.
The AIPS, established in 1924, is celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2014, and Dakar hosted the launch of the anniversary celebrations, which will extend throughout the year.
