Salvador Cabañas, the Paraguayan striker who survived a gunshot wound to the head in 2010, has signed a contract with a modest Brazilian club. The club, which competes in the 4th division of the Sao Paulo state championship, offered Cabañas a three-month deal with the possibility of extension or release if another club shows interest.
After undergoing training with his former club in Paraguay, Cabañas will be officially presented by his new Brazilian club on April 1, with his debut match scheduled for April 6. This marks a significant step for the 33-year-old player, who faced a long road to recovery after the tragic incident in Mexico City.
Following the shooting, which was perpetrated by a drug trafficker, Cabañas returned to football with his Paraguayan club before briefly playing for another team in the country’s second division. However, he faced personal and financial challenges, including alleged exploitation by his ex-wife, agent, and lawyer during his recovery period.
Despite these hardships, Cabañas persisted and found solace in his family’s bakery business near Asuncion. Now, with this opportunity in Brazil, he aims to reignite his football career and leave the troubles of the past behind.
