Otto Addo, the coach of Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, has addressed the challenges surrounding the selection of the team’s starting goalkeeper, acknowledging the difficulties faced by Jojo Wollacott in reclaiming the coveted position.
Ahead of the friendly clash against Uganda, Addo discussed the competitive landscape among the goalkeepers vying for the number one spot within the squad.
Addo commended Lawrence Ati-Zigi’s performance in the recent friendly against Nigeria, despite Ghana’s narrow 2-1 defeat.
He also lauded the promising displays of newcomer Frederick Asare during training sessions.
However, Addo highlighted the predicament confronting Wollacott, who previously held the position of first-choice goalkeeper before being sidelined due to injury during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Currently, Wollacott faces limited playing time at Scottish club Hibernian.
“I left it open,” remarked Addo regarding the selection of the starting goalkeeper for the Uganda match. “I have to say that Ati-Zigi had a good match.
I gave him the start because he is a regular player in his club. Frederick is new and young. I think he made a good first impression.”
Addressing Wollacott’s situation, Addo explained, “Joseph Wollacott at the moment is not playing in his club so it’s difficult to say that he will be the number one at the moment.” Nevertheless, Addo affirmed that Wollacott would be afforded the opportunity to demonstrate his abilities in the forthcoming match against Uganda.
“We will decide in June who will be the goalkeeper who will stand in the goal,” Addo concluded, underscoring the coaching staff’s commitment to thoroughly assess and evaluate all goalkeeping options before making a final decision.
