The Mauritanian sports media is abuzz with anticipation as the national team, known as the “Al-Murabitoun,” prepares to face off against the Atlas Lions of Morocco on Tuesday at the Adrar Stadium in the city of Agadir.
In this regard, Mauritanian sports journalist Ahmed Al-Imam, in a statement to “Hesport,” remarked, “We have a strong team defensively, among the strongest in Africa, under the leadership of coach Amr Abdou.”
Al-Imam added, “The problem with the Mauritanian team lies in the absence of offensive efficiency, which we have struggled with in previous matches.
Moreover, facing formidable opponents doesn’t provide many opportunities.
Therefore, I would say this is the only weakness in the Al-Murabitoun squad.”
Regarding absences, the same journalist stated, “Both Abu Bakar Kouyate and Suleiman Anne will miss out due to injuries sustained before the friendly match against Mali in Marrakech.
Other than that, all other players will be available.”
The Mauritanian Football Federation, in an official statement, attributed the exclusion of the aforementioned duo to injury, with striker Mamadou Cisse being called up by coach Amr Abdou to bolster the Mauritanian national team’s ranks.
The Mauritania national team is gearing up to face the Sudanese national team on June 3 in the African qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, followed by a match against Senegal on June 10 in the fourth round of qualifiers.
It is worth noting that the Mauritania national team achieved an unprecedented feat in the last Africa Cup of Nations by reaching the round of 16 before succumbing to Cape Verde by a solitary goal.
