98 DAYS BEFORE THE 2014 WORLD CUP, WHERE ARE THE AFRICAN TEAMS?

The FIFA Day on March 5 provided an initial assessment of the African teams’ preparations for the 2014 World Cup, with some encouraging signs and others raising concerns.

Ghana faced difficulties against Montenegro, conceding an early penalty and struggling to assert themselves despite the return of key players. Although a strong contender for advancing to the next round in Brazil, Ghana will need to show improvement.

Ivory Coast showed character in securing a 2-2 draw against Belgium, despite facing pressure for much of the match. However, defensive weaknesses, compounded by the absence of starting goalkeeper Barry Copa, remain a concern. In a challenging group with Colombia, Japan, and Greece, Ivory Coast will need to address these issues.

Cameroon displayed promise in the first half but faltered in the second, conceding five goals to Portugal. Defensive errors and lapses in concentration proved costly for the Indomitable Lions. With Brazil, Portugal, and Croatia in their World Cup group, Cameroon faces a tough challenge.

Algeria delivered a convincing performance against Slovenia, winning 2-0 and showcasing promising talents such as Nabil Bentaleb and Aissa Mandi. Nigeria also showed promise in a goalless draw against Mexico, although they lacked cohesion due to many players lacking playing time in European clubs.

With the World Cup approaching, these teams will need to address their weaknesses and build on their strengths to compete effectively on the global stage.
