There will be no football matches in Cyprus this weekend following a disturbing incident involving referee Leontios Trattos. Trattos, who has officiated in prestigious tournaments such as the World Cup and the Europa League, woke up on Friday morning to find his car completely destroyed by a bomb explosion outside his home in Nicosia.
In response to this shocking attack, Trattos’ colleagues in the refereeing community immediately declared a strike for the weekend. Their decision received full support from the Cypriot Football Federation (CFA), which strongly denounced the attack.
The CFA stated that it “condemns this attack in the strongest possible terms.” As a result, all football matches have been suspended for this weekend. The championship matches are now scheduled to resume on March 8 and 9.
