In the round of 16 of the African Confederation Cup, Wadi Degla FC embarked on their journey from Egypt to Togo this morning. Currently positioned fourth in their nation’s group championship, the Egyptian squad is anticipated at the airport, where a delegation led by Ambassador Mohamed El-Nokaly awaits their arrival. The diplomat himself insisted on being there to greet them upon landing. Although scheduled for 1 p.m., the delegation has yet to arrive.
Reports indicate that AS Douanes, their opposing club, will arrive in Lomé equipped with their provisions, including food and water sourced from local supermarkets.
Unlike their Togolese counterparts, Wadi Degla did not contest the first round, marking their debut in African competition.
Under the guidance of Belgian coach Walter Meeuws, the team made waves in Egyptian football history during the 2009-2010 season. Their victory over Al Sekka Al Hadid, with a score of 3-1 on the final day of the Egyptian D2 championship, secured their promotion to the top division for the first time ever.
The highly-anticipated match is slated for this Sunday at the Lomé Municipal Stadium. Ahead of the game, the visiting team will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the synthetic turf on Saturday.
