Customs officials at Tunis-Carthage airport confiscated 15,000 euros and 10,000 dollars from Ghanaian footballer Harrison Afful. The incident occurred as Afful was traveling to Kenya with his team, Esperance Sportive de Tunis, for a Champions League match. The money was discovered hidden in Afful’s shoes during a routine inspection.
Afful explained that the sum represented his bonus for Ghana’s qualification for the 2014 World Cup. However, Tunisian customs were not satisfied with this explanation and insisted on verifying the source of the money with the central bank.
According to reports, Afful did not have authorization from the bank for the large sum of cash and had failed to declare it before traveling. This violation could result in a significant fine, estimated at three times the amount seized.
Despite the incident, Afful was allowed to proceed with his trip to Kenya with his team.
