Algerian football veterans have expressed their disappointment with the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) for what they perceive as a lack of communication and respect in the selection process under new coach Vladimir Petkovic.
In his inaugural squad announcement, Petkovic omitted several seasoned players, including Raïs M’Bohli, Sofiane Feghouli, Islam Slimani, Youcef Belaïli, and Riyad Mahrez, who have been instrumental in Algeria’s footballing success in recent years under former coach Djamel Belmadi.
While the players did not contest their exclusion from the squad, they criticized the manner in which they were informed.
According to reports from the Gazzette des Fennecs, Islam Slimani expressed his disappointment at discovering his absence only upon the release of Petkovic’s list.
Slimani suggested that the FAF should have communicated with them beforehand out of respect and courtesy.
The lack of “tact” and “elegance” in handling the situation has left a sour taste for the veterans, who have dedicated years to representing Algeria on the international stage.
Slimani, who boasts 35 years, 102 caps, and 46 goals for his country, along with Mahrez (33 years, 94 caps, 31 goals), M’Bohli (37 years, 96 caps), Feghouli (34 years, 83 caps, 19 goals), and Belaïli (32 years, 54 caps, 9 goals), now face slim prospects of a return to the national team.
Petkovic’s decision signals a shift towards rejuvenating the squad with younger talents, marking a transitional phase for Algerian football.
While acknowledging the need for renewal, the veterans feel that better communication from the FAF would have been appreciated, given their contributions to Algerian football.
The FAF’s handling of the situation has sparked debate within the Algerian football community, highlighting the importance of transparent and respectful communication in managing national team affairs.
As Algeria prepares for its next chapter under Petkovic, the episode underscores the delicate balance between tradition and evolution in footballing circles.
