SOCHI 2014: WILL GOOGLE BLACKLIST PART OF THE EVENT?

Article Google 1 300x194 1
The opening of the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi was marked by controversy as four gay activists were arrested by the Russian police in St. Petersburg. The activists were accused of displaying a flag with the principle 6 of the Olympic Charter, which states that “discrimination is incompatible with the Olympic movement.” This incident has intensified criticism against Moscow for its alleged discrimination against homosexuals.

Several American companies, including AT&T Telecom, have condemned Russia’s anti-gay laws and have called for either a boycott of the games or demonstrations. In a symbolic gesture, Google changed its doodle to the colors of the rainbow flag, a symbol of the gay community, just hours before the opening of the games. This move is seen as a reminder of the importance of athletes being free to express their sexuality, and a denouncement of the homophobia that could overshadow the games in Sochi, particularly in light of the arrest of the activists.

Critics question whether keywords promoting homophobia should be allowed in the top search engine, highlighting the broader societal debate surrounding LGBTQ+ rights and the role of multinational corporations in promoting inclusivity and equality.
