In December of last year, André Ayew found himself in the midst of controversy when he was photographed in a nightclub alongside several players from PSG, the rival club of Olympique de Marseille. The image sparked criticism from Marseille supporters. As he nears his return to playing with Marseille after recovering from injury, the Ghanaian player addressed the controversy in an interview with Canal+.
Ayew maintains his stance that the controversy surrounding the photo was unnecessary. He emphasized that if players from rival teams are friends, it should not be a cause for concern. Ayew clarified his perspective, stating, “The photo with the PSG players? If they are friends? Friends is a big word. But we must not mix things up. There is rivalry between supporters… I am the number one supporter of OM. But if we have to say hello to a player, we do it. This controversy was rubbish for me.”
Ayew, whom James Kwesi Appiah considers a “world-class player,” stands by his view that personal relationships between players should not be a source of unnecessary controversy, especially when it comes to rivalry between clubs and their supporters.
