In May 2010, the Paris public prosecutor’s office opened a judicial investigation, including charges of assassinations related to a terrorist enterprise, following the attack on the bus of the Togo football team during the African Cup of Nations in Cabinda, Angola. The investigation was initiated based on a complaint filed by the Republic of Angola against Rodrigues Mingas, the secretary-general of the Cabinda rebel group, Flec-PM (Cabinda State Liberation Forces/Military Position). Mingas, who lives in exile in France, claimed responsibility for the attack that left two dead and thirteen injured.
Four years after the tragedy, many questions remain unanswered. The investigation into the attack is still at an early stage, and the motives behind choosing Togo and the decision to travel by road instead of air are unclear. Rodrigues Mingas, who lives in France, is yet to face legal consequences for his role in the attack. The lack of progress in the investigation continues to be a source of pain for those affected by the tragic event.
