The finalists for the 2013 CAF Awards are Yaya Touré, Didier Drogba, and John Obi Mikel. The winner will be announced on January 9 in Lagos, Nigeria. Yaya Touré, a double winner of the African Ballon d’Or, is considered the favorite due to his outstanding performances with Manchester City. However, the early elimination of Ivory Coast in the last Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) might affect his chances. Didier Drogba, despite a less successful CAN, had a strong finish to the season with a quarter-final appearance in the Champions League and winning the Turkish league with Galatasaray. The surprise candidate is John Obi Mikel, who won the African championship with Nigeria and performed well at the Confederations Cup. Mikel’s consistent performances both at the national and club levels could make him a strong contender for the award.
