The former main sponsor of Cameroonian football, MTN, will no longer be associated with the national championships. The 1st and 2nd division leagues, previously known as MTN Elite One and MTN Elite Two, will now be referred to as Ligue 1 and Ligue 2. This decision, announced by the interim general secretary of the Cameroon Professional Football League (LFPC), Thérèse Manguélé, has sparked controversy, as some believe it was prematurely communicated before the validation by the General Assembly of the LFPC and the Cameroonian Federation. The name change is set to take effect, with the next edition of the 1st division championship launching as Ligue 1 on January 18, 2014.
