Renowned Moroccan referee, Rédouane Jiyed, stands as one of the most prominent figures in African football officiating. Therefore, recent speculations surrounding his alleged suspension by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) demand a thorough examination and clarification of the details.

In an exclusive interview with Koora, Jiyed affirmed his rightful place as the lead referee for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final and shed light on the truth behind the alleged insubordination he faced from CAF.

This purported suspension, whether at club or national team levels, for the remainder of the current season, as well as his stance on the state of refereeing in the Moroccan league, was brought to light. Below are excerpts from the interview:

Clarification on Alleged Suspension by CAF

“I am utterly surprised by the circulating rumors in this regard. Unfortunately, certain websites and stations have adopted them.

I categorically deny receiving any such decision or that CAF convened and ruled on such a matter.”

Rebelling Against CAF During AFCON Finals

“These claims are equally fabricated. I was simply informed that I would officiate the third-place playoff, not the final.

I expressed my dissatisfaction with utmost respect and requested clarification.

Despite my profound respect for my Mauritanian colleague who officiated the final, based on the circumstances, I still believe I was more deserving of the assignment.”

Evaluation Criteria

“My evaluation is based on my extensive experience, which includes over 193 matches in Africa, my presence at the World Cup, and having officiated the previous edition of AFCON.

Additionally, I am nine years senior in terms of both badge and international experience compared to my colleague.”

Returning to Morocco Before the Final

“No, that’s not accurate. After seeking clarification, and receiving no response, I was told they had withdrawn my assignment due to my psychological condition.

I then requested to return to Morocco, as there was no longer a reason for me to stay in Cote d’Ivoire.”

Subsequent Match Withdrawals

“Yes, that’s correct. I was preparing to travel to Tunisia for the Tunisian derby between Esperance and Etoile du Sahel in the Champions League when I was informed once again that they had assigned the match to another referee.

The reason cited was the same, considering my mental state and unsuitable mood. I returned to seek further explanation, but no one responded. This was incredibly disheartening.”

Reflections on Moroccan Refereeing

“I am deeply disheartened by the criticisms and noise surrounding Moroccan refereeing this season.

Moroccan referees attained international recognition when the late Saïd Belqola officiated the 1998 FIFA World Cup final.

Our presence at AFCON has been historic, with seven referees.

Therefore, I hope stern action is taken against anyone who dares to tarnish the reputation of Moroccan referees, and decisive measures are issued to restore their standing.”
