In The Guardian’s annual list of the 100 best players on the planet, five Africans have made the cut. The highest-ranking African is Yaya Touré, the Ivorian international and Manchester City midfielder, who secured the 19th position. The overall list is led by Lionel Messi, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Other Africans in the top 100 include Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Gabon (79th), Samuel Eto’o from Cameroon (83rd), and Moroccan defender Mehdi Benatia from AS Roma (85th). Nigerian striker Emmanuel Emenike, the African champion, is ranked 97th.
