According to reports from the Italian press agency Ansa, Italian police arrested four individuals on Tuesday morning in connection with the “Calcioscommesse” match-fixing affair. The investigation has also targeted Gennaro Gattuso, who is suspected of criminal conspiracy for the purposes of sports fraud. The arrests are linked to allegations of these individuals serving as a connection between the world of clandestine betting and football players.
The four arrested individuals’ specific locations were not disclosed by investigators. Gattuso, who previously served as the coach of Palermo in the Italian 2nd division, was dismissed after a few matches. Another former Lazio player, Cristian Brocchi, is also under investigation for the same reason.
This police operation, conducted by the Cremona public prosecutor’s office, involved several dozen agents deployed in various Italian cities. It echoes the Calcioscommesse scandal uncovered in 2010 and draws parallels with a recent case at Grödig, an Austrian 2nd division club, where a widespread network of players involved in match-fixing was dismantled.
