Louis Meintjes has been named African Cyclist of the Year for 2013. The 21-year-old South African, representing the MTN-Qhubeka team, secured the title with one vote more than his compatriot Daryl Impey, who became the first African to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France. The Eritrean Natnael Berhane, the 2012 African Cyclist of the Year, finished third. The jury, chaired by Bernard Hinault and including cycling specialists like Chris Froome, awarded Meintjes for his achievements, including a silver medal in the under-23 road world championships and a stage victory in the Tour of Rwanda. He will be presented with the trophy on January 19 in Libreville.
