Didier Drogba stands firm and expresses no regrets for his tribute to Nelson Mandela, the revered former South African president, who passed away last Thursday. The Ivorian striker, facing the threat of sanctions from the Turkish Football League for displaying a t-shirt reading “Thank you Madiba,” remains unapologetic.
“I’m sorry, but if I had to, I would do it again and again and again,” declared the Ivorian international on his Instagram account. Drogba clarified that his tribute was not intended as a political message but as a homage to Mandela, whom he views as an inspiration for a country, a continent, and the entire world. In a show of gratitude, he concluded, “Thank you again Madiba.”
Football regulations typically prohibit players from showcasing slogans or political messages on their jerseys, subject to fines. Drogba’s teammate and compatriot, Emmanuel Eboue, also paid tribute by unveiling a t-shirt with the message: “Rest in peace Nelson Mandela.” Both players appear undeterred by the potential sanctions, driven by their respect and admiration for Mandela’s enduring legacy.
