Fethiyesport, a Turkish club, is facing disciplinary action from the Football Federation after players displayed jerseys celebrating Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the father of modern Turkey, before a Turkish Cup match against Fenerbahçe in Istanbul. During the national anthem, the players revealed T-shirts with letters spelling out “Yüce Atatürk” (Great Atatürk), a reference to the founder of the secular Turkish Republic in 1923. The Football Federation criticized the team for appropriating values embraced by the entire nation for the sole purpose of provoking controversy. The nature of the sanctions against Fethiyesport is yet to be determined.
