2014 WORLD CUP-IVORY COAST: COLOMBIA, GREECE, JAPAN, WILL THE ELEPHANTS FINALLY BE ABLE TO PASS THE FIRST ROUND?

The draw for the 2014 World Cup has placed Ivory Coast in Group C alongside Colombia, Greece, and Japan. While some perceive this group as within reach for the Elephants, caution is advised. In the 2010 World Cup, Ivory Coast faced Brazil and Portugal in a challenging Group G, ultimately failing to advance. This time, the group may appear more accessible, but Ivory Coast should not underestimate its opponents.

Colombia, absent from recent World Cups, features star striker Radamel Falcao, making them a formidable opponent. With an ascending team and Falcao’s prowess, Colombia poses a threat, especially given the South American style of play and strong support from Brazilian fans.

Greece, the 2004 European champion, may lack star power but is a resilient team, as demonstrated in the playoffs against Romania. With striker Mitroglou gaining recognition, Greece presents a challenge with its solid and determined style.

Japan, though perceived as declining by some, has experience and skill. In the 2010 World Cup, Japan advanced from a group that included Cameroon and the Netherlands. Players like Kagawa, Okasaki, and Honda contribute to Japan’s competitiveness, as seen in their recent draw against the Netherlands.

While Group C may seem within reach for Ivory Coast, the challenges posed by Colombia, Greece, and Japan should not be underestimated. The Elephants must approach each match with seriousness, learn from past experiences, and prepare thoroughly to secure qualification to the next round.
