The Cologne anti-doping laboratory developed a new method for detecting endogenous anabolic steroids, resulting in over 260 positive cases within a year that might have gone undetected before. The method is based on identifying a long-lasting metabolite in urine, allowing for increased sensitivity in detecting substances like Stanozolol and Oral-Turinabol. The laboratory reported around 180 positive cases for Stanozolol and 80 for Oral-Turinabol. The results surprised researchers, indicating a potential awareness among athletes about when to stop taking these substances to avoid detection. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and relevant international federations were informed of the cases, with no athletes contesting the results. Re-analyses of older samples using this method have also yielded positive cases dating from 2009 to 2011.
