Morocco’s national team, led by coach Walid Regragui, is set to engage in two friendly matches against African counterparts next month, as officially announced.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation declined a proposed friendly against Uruguay in Europe, opting instead for matches against African teams to enhance experience following the disappointment of the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), hosted by Ivory Coast, which saw the national team’s early exit.
Regragui stated in televised remarks on Friday, “We have chosen to play against two African teams.
Negotiations are still underway, but the matter has been essentially settled,” adding, “We will face African opponents after learning from the lessons of AFCON.”
Morocco exited the AFCON tournament in the round of 16, a significant upset considering their status as favorites after their fourth-place finish in the Qatar World Cup.
The friendlies are scheduled to take place in Agadir to accommodate Ramadan and the challenges of intercontinental travel during fasting times, considering players’ commitments to their European clubs.
Regarding potential changes within the coaching staff and player lineup, Regragui commented, “Yes, there will be changes affecting both the coaching staff and the players.
I will not disclose my visit to Europe, as some may speculate, as matters will be handled with utmost confidentiality.”
Regragui’s visit likely refers to meetings with potential recruits, including Real Madrid star Ibrahim Diaz, who has yet to finalize his decision, and other new European-based professionals being scouted for the national team.
