The Spanish Association for Human Rights (APDHE) has called for the cancellation of a friendly football match between Spain and Equatorial Guinea, citing concerns about human rights abuses in the country. The APDHE argues that the government of Equatorial Guinea, led by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, engages in systematic torture, arbitrary arrests, and extreme repression against citizens, civil organizations, and political groups. The association urges the Spanish football federation to suspend the match, stating that playing in Malabo would be a “propaganda coup” for Equatorial Guinea. The government of Equatorial Guinea, heavily dependent on oil revenues, has faced criticism for human rights violations and allegations of corruption.
