Senegal hand defender Massiré Sylla maiden call up
Senegal have handed Union Saint-Gilloise defender Massiré Sylla his maiden national team call-up ahead of their upcoming double-header against Sudan in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The defender has been included in Patrick Vieira’s 25-man squad as a replacement for Mamadou Sarr, who has been forced to withdraw from the selection after sustaining a calf injury.
Sarr picked up the injury during a match involving his club Real Sociedad, ruling him out of the upcoming international assignment and creating an opportunity for Sylla to earn his first invitation to the Senegal senior national team.
The late change represents an important milestone in the young defender’s career, as he prepares to join the Lions of Teranga for the first time and compete for an opportunity to make his international debut.
Sylla, who currently features for Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise, has now been rewarded with a place in Vieira’s squad following his performances at club level.
His inclusion also provides Senegal with an additional defensive option as they prepare for two important fixtures against Sudan, with both matches expected to have significant implications for their qualification campaign.
The Lions of Teranga will face Sudan on November 12 before meeting the same opponents again on November 16, with the two encounters forming part of the third and fourth matchdays of the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
For Vieira, the upcoming fixtures present an opportunity to assess his available options while maintaining the team’s competitive strength as Senegal continue their pursuit of a place at the continental tournament.
The decision to bring Sylla into the squad following Sarr’s injury also gives the technical team an opportunity to assess another defensive option within the national setup.
The defender will be hoping to make the most of his maiden invitation and demonstrate that he has the quality to become a regular presence in the Senegal national team in the future.
Although this represents his first opportunity to feature for the senior side, the call-up offers him a valuable platform to work alongside some of the country’s established international players and gain experience at the highest level.
Senegal head into the November international window with one victory and one draw from their opening two matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The West African giants began their campaign with an encouraging result before recording a victory in their subsequent fixture, leaving them with four points from a possible six.
However, Vieira’s side will be eager to strengthen their position in the qualifying group by collecting positive results against Sudan in the upcoming double-header.
The two fixtures will be particularly important as Senegal seek to maintain their ambitions of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and reaffirm their status among the continent’s leading football nations.
With Sylla now receiving his first opportunity at international level, the Union Saint-Gilloise defender will be determined to make a positive impression during the November camp.
His immediate priority will be to adapt to the national team’s setup, impress the coaching staff and compete for a place in the starting lineup as Senegal prepare for their crucial meetings with Sudan.
