Riyad Mahrez hails Ibrahim Maza’s rise as ‘magnificent’

Riyad Mahrez has praised young Algeria midfielder Ibrahim Maza, describing what he is doing as “magnificent” after the Bayer Leverkusen player’s breakthrough season.

Mahrez, who retired from international football following Algeria’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup, remains closely interested in the national team and its emerging talent.

Maza, 20, finished ninth in the Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best young player of the season. He is viewed as one of the leading prospects for both Algeria and the country’s wider football future.

Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone after producing an outstanding performance in the Qatar Stars League, Mahrez highlighted Maza’s professionalism, character and humility.

The former Algeria captain was speaking after helping Al-Shamal beat Al-Sailiya 5-0 on Saturday during the league’s ninth round. Mahrez scored once and provided three assists in the victory.

Mahrez, who won 119 caps and scored 40 goals for Algeria, has also played alongside Maza for the national side. He praised the midfielder’s work ethic and suggested those qualities could help him enjoy a significant career.

Maza was born in Berlin and moved into senior football with Bayer Leverkusen. His progress has made him an important part of Algeria’s next generation, alongside a number of other young players coming through the national set-up.

When asked whether he saw similarities between Maza’s early career and his own beginnings, Mahrez again expressed his admiration for the midfielder while ensuring that the rest of Algeria’s young players were also recognised.
