Da Cruz says Kaizer Chiefs must add value, not numbers, in January window

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz says the club’s January transfer plans will focus on improving the squad rather than simply increasing its size.

Amakhosi have recruited extensively during the current campaign, bringing in Thabo Moloisane, Langelihle Phili, Khanyisa Mayo, Adolf Mtasingwa, Faiz Abrahams on loan, Renaldo Leaner and, most recently, Elias Mokwana.

However, injuries have limited the availability of some of those players, while the team’s results have remained inconsistent. Kaizer Chiefs have already been eliminated from two cup competitions, the MTN8 and the CAF Confederation Cup.

Their form in the Betway Premiership has also fallen short of expectations. The Glamour Boys are fifth in the table, despite beginning the campaign at the top of the standings.

Recruitment at the club has come under heavy criticism, but Da Cruz says any additions made in January must be carefully considered and have a clear purpose.

“There are two months until January, so there is still time and matches to play,” he told the club’s website.

“We don’t just want to recruit players. We want to add value to the squad, so it is very important to do it right.

“We know that we have a lack of experience in certain positions to help and support our young, talented players every day in training to develop and mature.”

Da Cruz’s comments come as Kaizer Chiefs prepare for a difficult Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final against Siwelele FC on Sunday.

The match will be played at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, with kick-off scheduled for 18:00.
