Manchester United have suffered a significant injury setback following confirmation that summer signing Carlos Baleba will spend several weeks on the sidelines after sustaining an injury during their UEFA Champions League encounter against Roma.

The 22-year-old Cameroonian midfielder picked up the injury shortly after the half-time interval, forcing him out of the contest at a crucial stage of the match. Baleba had been handed a starting role by head coach Michael Carrick but was unable to see out the game after experiencing discomfort.

The midfielder’s condition immediately raised concerns among the Manchester United technical team, with the club’s medical staff forced to assist him off the pitch as he struggled to continue. His withdrawal was an unwanted development for the Red Devils, particularly given the important role he has been expected to play in the team’s midfield this season.

Following the encounter, Carrick provided an update on the midfielder’s condition, confirming that the injury was serious enough to keep him out of action for several weeks.

Although the exact nature and full extent of the problem have yet to be established, the United boss made it clear that Baleba would not be available for the club’s upcoming fixtures, including Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Aston Villa.

The former Brighton midfielder will also miss the forthcoming international break, meaning he will be unavailable for Cameroon if selected for their upcoming national team assignments.

“We don’t know exactly, but it will take several weeks. He definitely won’t be back this week or during the international break. It will take a little longer,” Carrick explained.

The latest setback represents a considerable disappointment for Baleba, who would have been hoping to maintain his momentum and establish himself as an influential figure in Manchester United’s midfield following his summer arrival.

His absence also presents Carrick with an additional selection headache as United prepare for a demanding period of the campaign. The manager will now have to consider alternative midfield combinations to compensate for the Cameroonian’s absence, particularly with the Premier League schedule continuing to place significant demands on the squad.

Baleba’s physical presence, energy, ball-winning ability and capacity to drive the team forward have made him an important component of United’s midfield plans. His ability to cover ground, compete in challenges and provide protection for the defence is expected to be missed during his recovery period.

The Red Devils will be hoping that the 22-year-old responds positively to treatment and rehabilitation, although the club are unlikely to rush his return until he has fully recovered.

For now, United’s priority will be to manage his recovery carefully, with Carrick and his medical team expected to monitor his progress before determining when he can return to first-team training and competitive action.
