Xabi Alonso backs Wesley Fofana despite inconsistent performances at Chelsea

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has reaffirmed his confidence in Wesley Fofana, insisting that the French defender remains an important part of his plans despite his inconsistent performances this season.

The 25-year-old centre-back attracted criticism following a difficult first-half display in Chelsea’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

However, Alonso dismissed suggestions that he considered substituting Fofana at half-time, praising the defender’s response after the interval.

“No, no, because it’s about dealing with difficult moments and he did many good things,” the Chelsea manager explained when asked whether he had considered taking the defender off.

“For sure, the mistakes, he knew, and he reacted really well the second half he was solid. He was reliable as he was in Liverpool despite of the penalty. So no, no, he will know that I didn’t think that,” Alonso added.

The Spanish coach also highlighted Fofana’s growing maturity and ability to handle difficult situations, pointing out that he has spent four years at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso praises Fofana’s growing maturity

Alonso believes Fofana has become more focused and responsible this season, with changes in his personal life also contributing to his development.

The Chelsea manager revealed that becoming a father has helped the defender mature, while also recognising his increased willingness to take responsibility on the pitch.

“So, I’m seeing now that he’s very focused this year. This is mature. He’s had his baby, so that’s making him more mature, as well as taking more responsibilities on the pitch as well,” he said.

The former Real Madrid midfielder also insisted that Chelsea will continue supporting the Frenchman despite the mistakes he has made.

“Sometimes he’s not direct, but sometimes he helps as well, so we support him, and he’s important,” Alonso added.

Fofana expected to retain his place

Fofana’s importance to Chelsea has increased following Maxence Lacroix’s hamstring injury, which is expected to keep the French defender sidelined until after the November international break.

With Lacroix unavailable, Alonso has limited options in central defence, leaving Fofana and Levi Colwill among the leading choices for the position.

The Chelsea manager previously praised Fofana’s performance in the Carabao Cup encounter against Liverpool, describing him as consistent and strong despite the disappointment of missing his penalty in the shootout.

Chelsea will hope the defender maintains his improved performances as they prepare for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Sunderland.

Alonso’s public backing underlines his determination to help Fofana rediscover consistency and establish himself as a reliable figure in the Blues’ defence.
