Toni Kroos hails Dayot Upamecano’s transformation at Bayern Munich after impressive Atletico display
Former Germany international Toni Kroos has praised Dayot Upamecano’s development at Bayern Munich, highlighting the defender’s improved composure, confidence and physical presence following his impressive performances this season.
The 28-year-old French centre-back has established himself as a key figure in Vincent Kompany’s defence, with his recent display in Bayern’s 2-0 Champions League victory over Atlético Madrid attracting particular attention.
Speaking on the podcast Einfach mal Luppen, Kroos pointed to the significant improvement in Upamecano’s concentration and decision-making, qualities that had previously attracted criticism.
“What he radiates now, not just what he plays, is something else entirely,” the 2014 World Cup winner said.
Kroos acknowledged that Upamecano had always possessed considerable defensive ability but occasionally undermined his performances through costly mistakes.
“You could always tell he had it in him, but he often made crucial mistakes or lost focus. He’s cut that down drastically,” he added.
The former Real Madrid midfielder also highlighted the defender’s improved body language and growing confidence, particularly when winning tackles and making important defensive interventions.
“You can see how he celebrates winning the ball and making saves now. That wasn’t the case before, and of course that has an effect too,” Kroos explained.
Kroos singles out Upamecano’s battle with Álvarez
Kroos used Bayern’s Champions League encounter against Atlético Madrid as an example of how much the French defender has developed.
Upamecano faced Argentine forward Julián Álvarez throughout the contest, with the Bayern centre-back using his physical strength and defensive awareness to limit the striker’s influence.
The former Germany midfielder was particularly impressed by how Upamecano handled his individual battles against the World Cup winner.
“Julián Álvarez is a world-class striker, but he just brushed him aside and really defended him off with that power, with that presence,” Kroos said.
The 36-year-old concluded his assessment with a strong endorsement of the defender’s current performances.
“He’s playing at an incredible level right now.”
Upamecano becoming a defensive leader at Bayern
Upamecano’s improved consistency has made him an increasingly important figure in Bayern’s defensive setup under Kompany.
His ability to combine physical strength, pace and composure has helped the German champions maintain defensive stability in important matches.
Kroos’ comments provide further recognition of the Frenchman’s progress, particularly after previous seasons in which individual mistakes occasionally overshadowed his defensive qualities.
With Bayern competing on multiple fronts, Upamecano will be expected to maintain his impressive form as the season progresses.
