Bernardo Silva’s Real Madrid revival gives Jose Mourinho selection dilemma

Bernardo Silva has gone from an afterthought to one of Real Madrid’s most important players in less than a month, leaving Jose Mourinho with a difficult decision when Vinicius Junior returns.

The Portugal midfielder had been given only 15 minutes of football during the previous 30 days, underlining how far he had fallen down Mourinho’s list of options. His situation has changed dramatically, however, with Silva now viewed by the coaching staff as the creative force behind the team in major matches.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Silva has produced one of the season’s most notable recoveries. He has started four successive games as Mourinho has relied more heavily on squad rotation, a sign of the growing trust in his ability and the improvement in his form.

Leipzig marks turning point

The decisive moment came in the meeting with Leipzig. Silva opened the scoring by finishing a rebound inside the penalty area and maintained an influential performance throughout the 90 minutes, helping Real Madrid secure a convincing victory and restore calm after a period of inconsistency.

Real Madrid have looked more controlled and balanced with Silva operating in midfield since that game, with the team better able to impose its tempo.

AS reports that Mourinho believes he has found the solution he had been seeking, prompting him to retain Silva in the starting line-up for matches against Barcelona in El Clasico, Santander and AEK Athens.

Silva did not complete any of those three matches as the coaching staff sought to manage his workload, but he remained a central part of the team. His display at Camp Nou against Barcelona was one of Mourinho’s major gains of the season, showing that Real Madrid could do more than win: they could also dominate possession and dictate the match.

Numbers underline Silva’s importance

Silva continued to demonstrate his value against AEK Athens, where the club described his performance as good and he made a significant contribution in several technical and statistical areas.

He ranked second among his team-mates for chances created, led the side for completed passes in the final third and finished second for successful dribbles. He also topped the team’s standings for ball recoveries.

Silva was second within the squad for expected goals, behind only Kylian Mbappe, confirming his attacking influence alongside his work in possession and when regaining the ball.

His most striking statistic was a passing accuracy of 96.4% – the best figure among Real Madrid’s midfielders and forwards. It reflected his precision and his ability to give the team composure while controlling the pace of matches.

Silva’s influence has also grown in the dressing room. His voice now carries more weight among his team-mates, and he has taken on a leadership role beyond the pitch.

The midfielder has helped Mourinho settle on a clearer structure, with Federico Valverde at right-back, Arda Guler on the wing and Silva at the heart of midfield.

That arrangement could be challenged by Vinicius Junior’s return. Mourinho may have to remove one player from his plans, with Diomande among those potentially affected. For now, though, Silva’s place appears secure after his rapid rise from limited involvement to an indispensable role in the side.
