Hansi Flick targets Atletico Madrid revenge as Diego Simeone remains his toughest rival
Hansi Flick has faced Diego Simeone more often than any other manager in his coaching career, but their head-to-head record does not fully reflect the pain the Atletico Madrid boss has caused him.
Simeone delivered two damaging blows to Barcelona last season, eliminating them from both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League. Those defeats left a lasting scar for Flick as he prepares to face his most familiar opponent again.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Flick and Simeone have met 12 times since the German began his managerial career, during his spells with Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
Flick has won more of those encounters, but Simeone’s two victories of greatest consequence came last season, when Atletico Madrid ended Barcelona’s hopes in two major competitions.
Their rivalry began six years ago, on 21 October 2020, when Bayern Munich hosted Atletico Madrid in the opening round of the Champions League group stage.
The match at Allianz Arena ended in a commanding 4-0 victory for Flick’s Bayern Munich. It was the first of a series of meetings that would become a regular fixture between the two managers.
Most of their subsequent encounters took place while Flick was in charge of Barcelona. Ten of their 12 matches came during his time at the Catalan club.
Across those 10 games, Flick recorded six victories, one draw and three defeats against Simeone’s Atletico Madrid. The figures give the German a clear advantage in terms of results, but they do not show the scale of the difficulties his Argentine rival has created in decisive matches.
Two defeats in particular explain why Simeone continues to represent a problem for Flick.
The first came in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final, when Atletico Madrid swept aside Barcelona 4-0. That result left Barcelona on the brink of elimination before the return fixture.
Atletico Madrid then struck again in the Champions League. They won 2-0 in the first leg of the quarter-final at Spotify Camp Nou, leaving Barcelona with a difficult task in the second leg at Metropolitano.
Barcelona needed to overturn a two-goal deficit but failed to mount a comeback and were eliminated by their Madrid opponents.
Goals have been a constant
The meetings between Flick and Simeone have been notable not only for their importance but also for the lack of low-scoring stalemates.
None of their 12 matches has ended 0-0. Only one game has been decided by a single goal, with one side winning 1-0.
That record reflects the contrasting approaches of two managers with distinctive personalities. Their contest has grown more intense over the seasons and now carries an added personal significance for Flick, who is still seeking to move beyond the setbacks inflicted by Simeone last season.
