Mosimane explains McCarthy omission as Mbokazi returns for 2027 AFCON qualifiers
Pitso Mosimane says Aden McCarthy was left out of South Africa’s squad for the upcoming 2027 AFCON qualifiers because Mbekezeli Mbokazi has returned to full fitness, rather than because of any concerns over the defender’s form.
McCarthy has impressed since joining Azerbaijani champions Sabah FK, making regular appearances and scoring his first UEFA Champions League goal against Borussia Dortmund. However, the former Kaizer Chiefs academy player was not included in a defensive group featuring Mbokazi, Ime Okon, Olwethu Makhanya and Lebone Seema.
Mbokazi missed the September international window during an injury lay-off but has now recovered and been recalled by Mosimane. The Chicago Fire player was part of the South Africa side at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and will resume his international role alongside Makhanya.
Makhanya has also attracted significant praise since moving to Scottish club Rangers, while Seema remains in the squad after being named the reigning PSL Defender of the Season with Orlando Pirates.
Mosimane backs McCarthy’s progress
Speaking at Thursday’s squad announcement, Mosimane said McCarthy’s performances had been recognised but that the competition for places had made his selection difficult.
“I would like to also touch a little bit, just one point, especially on defenders,” said Mosimane.
“We saw Aden McCarthy. He scored also, right? He scored in the Championship League. But we need to give Mbokazi an opportunity to be back with the national team because he has done exceptionally well for the national team.
“He played in the World Cup, right? And then Olwethu Makhanya has been playing, right? So, you see now where we fall with McCarthy; he’s doing well, we all know that.
“If I had a friendly like with Egypt, I’d call all of them. They’d all be here and play, and we’d see them,” he added.
South Africa’s immediate focus is now on two Group D matches against Kenya, who are coached by former Bafana Bafana player Benni McCarthy.
The first fixture will be played at the Orlando Amstel Arena on 13 November. Mosimane’s team will then travel to Nairobi four days later for the return match.
The back-to-back qualifiers will be important for South Africa as they seek to strengthen their position at the top of a challenging group.
