Raphinha’s Brazil call-up sparks Barcelona anger over Singapore friendlies

Raphinha’s selection for Brazil’s November 2026 international break has triggered criticism in Barcelona after the national team confirmed plans to play two friendly matches in Singapore.

The Barcelona forward, who has suffered injuries during previous international windows, has faced condemnation from sections of the Catalan media over his decision to travel. The criticism has also been directed at the Brazilian Football Confederation and FIFA.

Speaking on the RAC1 radio programme Tu Diras, presented by Alex Parise, journalist Joan Poqui questioned the decision to call up Raphinha and strongly opposed his participation in the friendlies.

“There is no point in going to Singapore to play friendly matches with Brazil,” Poqui said, in comments highlighted by Marca. “There is no point when Raphinha has been injured during the last three international breaks and then repeats it again.

“There is no point in saying that it does not matter and that Ancelotti knows how to manage him… Nothing about this man makes sense.”

Poqui’s criticism extended beyond the Brazil call-up, with the journalist calling for Raphinha to be removed as one of Barcelona’s captains. He warned that the player’s involvement with Brazil could create another problem for the club if he returns injured.

“Personally, I would take the captain’s armband away from Raphinha now,” he said. “And when he comes back injured and is unable to play… it seems as if Barcelona keeps players so that they can play for their national teams.”

He then added: “It is a scandal! It is theft! This is unbearable! This international break makes no sense, nor did the previous one, and neither does this man going with Brazil now. There is no sense in him playing in the Nations League… This is madness! For God’s sake.”

The comments come as Raphinha’s position at Barcelona remains particularly sensitive because of his injury history during recent international breaks. His planned journey to Singapore has therefore become a source of debate among media voices close to the club.

Raphinha addressed his fitness on Thursday while discussing the renewal of his Barcelona contract. He said Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti understood the need to manage playing time and limit the risk of injury.

“Ancelotti understands, as a coach, the need to distribute playing time and the injury risk, especially with Brazil,” Raphinha said. “We have spoken, and I am recovering from an injury. I am in very good condition, but I am not fully fit.

“There is no need for Barcelona supporters to worry. I always do everything I can to be in good physical condition.”
