Newcastle United defender Amar Dedic was questioned by police after he was seen carrying a bow and arrows with a friend near Newcastle.
Northumbria Police sent at least six patrol cars, including armed units, to the area after receiving a report from a member of the public. The caller said two people had been spotted with a bow and arrows close to a water reservoir in Harlow Hill, on the outskirts of the city.
Officers later found 24-year-old Dedic and his companion in the residential area of Darras Hall, approximately seven miles from where the sighting had been reported.
The pair were stopped in their car, which was searched. Police seized the bow and arrows and questioned the Bosnia and Herzegovina international about the activity they had been undertaking.
Newcastle goalkeeper Mark Gillespie and former club defender Paul Dummett also became involved after passing the scene and stopping to offer assistance.
After taking statements from the two men, police concluded there was no threat to public safety. They said the seized equipment was, in principle, intended for recreational use, although the investigation remains ongoing.
According to Marca, citing the Daily Mail, Dedic and his friend had fired some arrows in a field. The reports did not identify what they had been aiming at.
Despite the unusual incident, Dedic is not expected to face disciplinary action from Newcastle. The Daily Mail reported that the club regarded his behaviour as reckless but did not intend to open an internal investigation.
Newcastle signed the Bosnia and Herzegovina full-back from Benfica for £30m last summer. He has established himself at right-back despite the club’s difficult start to the season.
Dedic played in Newcastle’s 1-0 defeat by Everton and is expected to be available for Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Fulham on 07 November 2026.
Newcastle are enduring a difficult spell, having lost four of their past five matches in all competitions.
