Mbekezeli Mbokazi has returned to the Bafana Bafana squad, while Themba Zwane has been left out of Pitso Mosimane’s final 27-man selection for two 2027 Afcon qualifiers against Kenya this month.
Mbokazi missed the previous squad because of injury, having last represented South Africa at the World Cup, where he made a strong impression. His return strengthens a defence that performed impressively in Bafana’s most recent qualifiers, although he will have to challenge Ime Okon and Olwethu Makhanya for a starting place.
South Africa beat Guinea 2-1 before recording a convincing 5-0 victory over Eritrea in their last two matches. Okon and Makhanya formed the central defensive partnership in those games and will be the players Mbokazi must displace if he is to regain his place in the starting line-up.
Mosimane has otherwise retained the core of his defence, including all three goalkeepers. Ronwen Williams, Sipho Chaine and Ricardo Goss are all included, despite continued scrutiny surrounding the battle between Williams and Goss for the No 1 position at Mamelodi Sundowns.
Teboho Mokoena remains the leading name in midfield, with Brooklyn Poggenpoel also included after making an impressive debut against Eritrea. Poggenpoel was called upon after Mokoena and Bathusi Aubaas suffered injuries before and during that match respectively.
Siyanda Ndlovu has been rewarded for his excellent start to the season at Sundowns and is viewed as a direct replacement for club captain Zwane.
When Mosimane became coach, he identified Zwane as one of his leaders and placed value on the veteran’s experience and knowledge of the national team. However, the coach has also prioritised bringing younger players into the squad, creating an opportunity for Ndlovu, who is considered a major prospect for the future.
Bafana will face the Harambee Stars, coached by South African legend Benni McCarthy, at Orlando Amstel Arena on Friday night at 6pm. They will then travel to Nairobi for the return fixture on Tuesday.
Winning both matches would take South Africa closer to qualification for the finals in East Africa. Bafana currently lead Group D with six points.
