Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister, Katia Aveiro, has paid tribute to the Portugal captain following his decision to retire from international football, while suggesting that some aspects of the decision may become clearer in time.
In a lengthy message posted on her Instagram story, Aveiro praised her brother’s career but also used wording that prompted questions about what may have happened behind the scenes.
“I could say a lot, but time will certainly reveal everything,” she wrote. “Until then, I will say this to you: you are great, a giant and a legend.”
Aveiro, the sister of Al Nassr captain Ronaldo, said she felt immense pride when looking back on his achievements with Portugal.
“Today, the world says goodbye to you with the Portugal national team,” she wrote. “But I, as your sister, look back and feel a pride that is too great for my heart to contain. I know the battles you have fought, everything you have given to our country and all that you have built throughout your career.”
She added: “You changed the course of your destiny, and you took Portugal with you. Yes, it is a sad day, but stages come to an end so that other stages can begin.
“Time is the judge, and if there is still something that needs an answer, perhaps things will become clearer tomorrow.”
The message concluded with an emotional reflection on her relationship with Ronaldo and the significance of his career.
“Your honour and the path you have taken are greater than any goodbye,” Aveiro wrote. “This picture may not be high quality, but it is hugely important to me because it preserves part of our history.
“It always reminds me that before you were Cristiano Ronaldo, admired by the world, you were and will always be my brother and my little boy. I love you, and I am endlessly proud of you.”
Aveiro did not explain what she meant by matters still requiring answers, or identify any specific events surrounding Ronaldo’s decision to end his international career. Her comments nevertheless added an element of uncertainty to the farewell.
The accompanying listing referred to Portugal’s fixture against Denmark in the UEFA Nations League – League A on 14 November 2026.
Ronaldo’s international retirement brings an end to his time with Portugal, while Aveiro’s message focused on both the scale of his achievements for his country and her personal memories of him away from football.
