Napoli explore move for Gavi as Barcelona role diminishes

Napoli have made an initial move towards signing Barcelona midfielder Gavi during the January transfer window, according to reports in Spain and Italy.

Mundo Deportivo says the 20-year-old’s limited involvement this season has attracted attention, with Napoli monitoring his situation closely. The report also says enquiries between the two clubs are already taking place.

Italian outlet CalcioMercato has suggested that a move could develop during the forthcoming winter transfer window, with Napoli looking to strengthen a midfield affected by injuries in recent weeks.

Barcelona are reportedly prepared to consider Gavi’s departure for €40m, although the player’s future could depend on whether his opportunities at the Catalan club improve before January.

Gavi was the subject of interest from Manchester United during the summer, but he rejected the possibility of leaving. He was convinced that remaining at Barcelona was the right decision after the final phase of last season, when he recovered from a knee injury and established himself in the team.

The midfielder started eight of Barcelona’s final nine La Liga matches last season, helping him secure his place in the World Cup squad.

However, his position in the pecking order has since weakened. The arrival of Rodri during the summer has increased competition in central midfield, where Barcelona already have Pedri, Bernal, Frenkie de Jong, Fermin and Dani Olmo.

Gavi has played just 146 minutes across four La Liga appearances this season. He has also featured for 45 minutes in the Champions League, coming off the bench in three of his appearances.

That reduced role has opened the possibility of a January departure, while Napoli are keen to take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding his place at Barcelona.
