Egypt’s Under-17 national team made history by becoming the first non-Gulf nation to win the Arabian Gulf U-17 Cup after defeating the United Arab Emirates 3-1 in the final in Qatar.
The young Pharaohs produced an impressive performance throughout the tournament, capping their campaign with a convincing victory over the UAE to secure their first title in the competition.
The achievement marks a significant milestone for Egyptian youth football, with the North African nation breaking the dominance of Gulf countries in the tournament.
Egypt break Gulf dominance
The 14th edition of the Arabian Gulf U-17 Cup has been hosted by Qatar since 17 October, with 10 countries participating.
Eight Gulf nations were joined by Egypt and China as invited teams for the competition.
Despite entering the tournament as guests, Egypt emerged as champions after winning all their group-stage matches before securing a 4-0 victory over China in the semi-finals.
Their 3-1 triumph over the UAE in the final completed an outstanding campaign and made them the first invited nation to lift the trophy.
Egypt add their name to tournament history
Before Egypt’s triumph, the competition had been won exclusively by Gulf nations across its previous 13 editions.
Saudi Arabia hold the record with six titles, while the UAE have won the trophy four times. Oman have claimed the championship on three occasions.
Egypt’s victory therefore ends the long-standing dominance of Gulf countries and establishes a new chapter in the tournament’s history.
Focus shifts to FIFA U-20 World Cup
The Egyptian youngsters will now turn their attention to another major challenge as they prepare for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will be hosted by Qatar from 19 November to 13 December.
Egypt have been drawn in Group 1 alongside hosts Qatar, Panama and Greece.
The Arabian Gulf U-17 Cup triumph will provide the young Pharaohs with a major confidence boost as they prepare for the global competition.
