CAF Awards 2026: ten goalkeepers shortlisted for Africa’s top individual prize

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the 10 nominees for the 2026 African Goalkeeper of the Year award, with contenders from eight countries included on the shortlist.

The category, part of the CAF Awards, recognises goalkeepers who have impressed for their clubs and national teams. The nominees combine established international figures with players who have made an impact in African and global competitions over the past year.

Algeria’s Oussama Benbot, Cape Verde’s Vozinha, Yahia Fofana of Cote d’Ivoire and RD Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi are among those in contention.

The list also includes Egypt’s El Mahdy Soliman and Mostafa Shobeir, Morocco’s Ahmed Reda Tagnaouti and Yassine Bounou, Edouard Mendy of Senegal, and South Africa captain Ronwen Williams.

Bounou seeking a third award

Bounou is one of the leading candidates after previously winning the prize in 2023 and 2025. The Morocco goalkeeper, who plays for Al Hilal, has built a reputation at the highest level and continues to produce consistent performances for his club and the Lions de l’Atlas.

He faces strong competition from Williams, who captains both Mamelodi Sundowns and South Africa. His continued form for club and country has strengthened his claim to the award.

Mendy is another prominent name on the shortlist. The Senegal international won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021 and now represents Al Ahli.

Egypt, Cape Verde among represented nations

Egypt is the only country with two nominees, with Mostafa Shobeir and El Mahdy Soliman both selected. The pair will compete for recognition while representing the Pharaons in the race for the individual honour.

Cape Verde’s Vozinha is also included after performances at the 2026 World Cup helped enhance his standing. Fofana is the sole nominee from Cote d’Ivoire, while Mpasi represents RD Congo.

Benbot completes Algeria’s representation, and Tagnaouti is the second Moroccan goalkeeper named on the list alongside Bounou.

The winner will be announced on 7 December 2026 at the CAF Awards ceremony in Lagos, Nigeria.

The ceremony will determine whether Bounou claims the prize for a third time or another goalkeeper adds their name to the roll of honour.
