Van Heerden targets bigger coaching role after distinguished playing career
Former Bafana Bafana defender Marc van Heerden says he is ready to take the next step in his coaching career after making more than 300 professional appearances as a player.
The 38-year-old represented several clubs during his playing days, including Orlando Pirates, AmaZulu FC, Cape Town City FC and Stellenbosch FC.
Van Heerden has now moved his attention from defending on the pitch to developing players from the dugout. He holds a UEFA B Licence and previously worked as an assistant coach at Sekhukhune United under Eric Tinkler.
He is currently studying for his CAF A Licence as he continues to strengthen his coaching qualifications.
“Football has shaped my life both as a player and now as a coach and I would certainly want to equip the next generation,” Van Heerden told KickOff.com.
“I remain passionate about developing people, building strong team cultures and helping players and teams maximise their potential.”
His experience of both professional dressing rooms and coaching environments has influenced his approach. Van Heerden says the culture created around a team is central to helping players improve, both in football and in their personal development.
He believes effective coaching involves more than simply preparing a team for matches, with training, learning and relationships all contributing to the development process.
“Through detailed training design, guided learning and strong relationships, I strive to create environments where players are challenged, supported and empowered to grow,” he said.
“The strongest teams are built on respect, trust, accountability, resilience and a shared purpose.”
Van Heerden’s time working in the professional game has given him the opportunity to learn from inside the dressing room and on the coaching staff. He is now seeking a position in which he can apply that experience and the knowledge gained through his coaching education.
The former Bafana Bafana international is open to working at different levels of South African football, including the Betway Premiership, Motsepe Foundation Championship or ABC Motsepe League.
Wherever his next opportunity comes, Van Heerden believes he is prepared for the demands of the role and ready to put his football philosophy into practice on the touchline.
