Relebohile Mofokeng on the radar of Lille and Leverkusen

French Ligue 1 side Lille OSC and German giants Bayer Leverkusen have emerged as potential suitors for South African international Relebohile Mofokeng, following his impressive start to life at Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise.

The 22-year-old attacker has attracted attention from several European clubs after quickly establishing himself as an influential figure at USG since completing his move from South African outfit Orlando Pirates during the summer.

According to reports, Lille have identified Mofokeng as a potential target as they explore opportunities to strengthen their attacking department ahead of the January transfer window.

The French side are particularly attracted by the South African’s versatility, with his ability to operate as an attacking midfielder or on either wing making him an appealing option for their recruitment team.

However, Lille are unlikely to have a straightforward path towards securing his signature, with Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen also monitoring his situation.

Tavolieri reports that the German champions have already made enquiries about the availability of the highly rated attacker as they assess the possibility of bringing him to the Bundesliga.

Mofokeng has made an encouraging impression in Belgium, registering five goals and four assists in 15 appearances across all competitions for Union Saint-Gilloise.

His impressive attacking contributions have further enhanced his reputation in European football, with his performances suggesting that his stay in Belgium could be shorter than initially anticipated.

The former Orlando Pirates star joined Union Saint-Gilloise following South Africa’s participation in the FIFA World Cup and has wasted little time adapting to European football.

His technical ability, creativity and attacking versatility have made him an attractive prospect for clubs looking to strengthen their forward line.

For Lille, the possibility of signing Mofokeng represents an opportunity to add another creative dimension to their attack as they prepare for the second half of the season.

Leverkusen, meanwhile, could provide strong competition, having already made initial enquiries about the player’s situation.

With the January transfer window approaching, Mofokeng’s future at Union Saint-Gilloise could become one of the interesting transfer stories involving a South African player, although no formal agreement has been reached with either interested club.
